Visualize this: you, your dog, lounging at your favorite coffee shop patio. But rather than your dog sniffing your server's backside or scavenging the tabletop for food items, he lounges politely. Strangers comment on his mannerly presence. This is called 'Cafe Dog' and your dog can learn it too in Pavlov's obedience programs.

A kind client reached out upset and shaken.
She ran into her dog's first dog trainer who had worked with her dog prior to Pavlov's two week board and train program.
Like most of our board and train dogs, this dog came with a foundation of rewards-based only skills. Grateful for the foundation training, Pavlov enrolled the pup in obedience level 2.
When the dog trainer asked how her pup was doing, she explained, "She's behaved and HAPPY!" as demonstrated by her dog's beautiful heel and smiling face.
This dog trainer then pursued my client beyond the business and outside to her car and - and with what I'd imagine was a stern facial expression asked, "Where is her harness?"

My client explained that despite the original training they'd struggled with some stuff, so she enrolled in Pavlov's board and train program. During the program she learned to properly use a prong collar and a humane electronic collar. (The end result was being demonstrated.)
Now this type of information to a professional dog trainer is extremely useful. It presents an opportunity to ask questions and suss out what worked, so we might do things differently in the future. It is presents a learning opportunity. And it's humbling. 😉
But that is not where this story goes...

The original dog trainer grew cold and shamed her. She spoke down to her and made her, "feel like child who had done something wrong". She implied that she was going to damage her dogs' well being - while failing to notice the dog's happy disposition.
This is more than dog training fail. This is a human decency fail.

Isn't it interesting that this "pure positive, force free" dog trainer has no problem shaming her client?
So goes the irony that is the force free, pure positive movement.

Pepper was hurting his owners on the daily. Human

Human body parts were chew toys.
Walks were opportunities to dislocate shoulders.

Post-training and Zoe is no longer treating people like chew toys.
He heels perfectly.
He doesn't react at all anymore, even when dogs react at him. Best of all Pepper's family can safely have their grandkids over, and Pepper is especially gentle.

How did this happen?? Zoe's family put in the work.
Physically.
Emotionally.
They consciously changed their responses to Pepper and relationship with Pepper. The bruises are gone and Pepper gets to enjoy more walks.
